Home Why do I need an IDP?
Why an IDP

Your domestic license stops at the border. Your IDP doesn't.

An International Driving Permit is a UN-sanctioned translation of your license into the 10 official languages of the 1949 and 1968 Conventions. Without it, rental desks and police in most countries can legally refuse you.

Five reasons

When (and why) you'll actually need it

REASON 01

Renting a car abroad

Hertz, Avis, SIXT, Europcar and Enterprise all list an IDP as a required document for renters with non-Latin-script licenses, and recommend one for everyone else. Without it, the rental desk may legally refuse to release the vehicle, even with a reservation paid in full.

REASON 02

Police checks and roadside stops

Officers in non-English-speaking countries need to verify your license. The IDP is the document they're trained to recognise. Producing a domestic license alone may lead to detention, a fine, or impoundment of the vehicle.

REASON 03

Insurance and liability

Most travel and rental insurance policies require you to be "legally licensed to drive in the destination country" — which, under the UN conventions, means an IDP. A claim made without one can be denied even if the accident wasn't your fault.

REASON 04

Crossing land borders

Driving from France into Switzerland, or from the USA into Mexico, often triggers a license check at the border. An IDP smooths the conversation in a way a foreign-language plastic card cannot.

REASON 05

Moving on a long-stay visa

Many countries (Japan, South Korea, Italy, among others) require an IDP for the first 12 months of residency before you swap to a local license. Without one, you cannot legally drive while you wait.

REASON 06

ID at hotels, rentals, and SIM-card desks

In many countries the IDP doubles as an internationally recognisable photo ID. Useful when you don't want to hand over your passport at a beachside scooter rental.

Does your license already work where you're going?

Most US, EU and UK licenses are accepted in a handful of partner countries — but most of the world expects an IDP. Here's the short list of who needs one when.

🇺🇸 US license traveling to Japan, China, South Korea, Brazil, Italy, Greece, Croatia, IcelandIDP required
🇬🇧 UK license traveling to Japan, USA (some states), Argentina, ChinaIDP required
🇮🇳 Indian license traveling outside IndiaIDP required almost everywhere
🇪🇺 EU license traveling within the EUNot required — domestic license works
🇺🇸 US license traveling to CanadaNot required — domestic license works

What can go wrong

The cost of not having one.

Travelers without an IDP have reported being turned away from rental desks (~$200 hotel night to wait it out), fined on the spot (€50–€500 depending on country), having vehicles impounded (Italy, Greece), and having insurance claims denied after collisions. The cost of fixing any single one of these problems exceeds the cost of the permit by an order of magnitude.
